My Experience With Etsy
As a stay at home mom I really wanted to find a way to make some income of my own and still be able to be there for my kids. I have tried and failed a lot of different things and crafting has finally been the one thing that is working for me. I love to create and learn new things so I am able to offer a wide variety of products and do something that I really enjoy. At fi, st I was just selling locally through Facebook BST groups and I was getting a really positive response. People loved my work so much I decided I wanted to take it up a notch and sell my products online.
At first, it was really confusing trying to figure out what and where to sell at. I could have started with a stand-alone site just like what I have now but they cost money to start and maintain and it takes a lot of time to get traffic. I could have used eBay or Amazon but eBay isn’t really good for handmade items and Amazon’s $49.99 a month price tag is just too much. There are plenty of other choices I looked into but Etsy is the one that really stuck out. It is popular and it has its own customer base that you get to market to. The processing fees are pretty standard and not any worse than anywhere else. The only real drawback is the listing fees but if you refer people to Etsy then you can even get those for free. I have had my shop up for 4 months now and haven’t had to pay a single listing fee. I have already had 12 orders too which is pretty good for a brand new store with no client base yet!
Figuring Out Shipping
The shipping is the biggest thing you need to make sure you set up right so that your customers will want to order from you. You can do what I do and set up calculated shipping and let the customer cover the cost or you can work the shipping into your price and just set it to free shipping. Either way, you will need a shipping scale and you can get one of those on Amazon for $18ish. You also need envelopes or boxes that your products will fit in. Package all your products like you would when you are getting ready to ship and weigh them and get the measurements of your package. All you have to do from there is input the weight and dimensions into Etsy and your zip code and it will calculate the lowest shipping rate for you and your customers.
